Conditional Loyalty
People’s loyalty shouldn't be unconditional. Justice, humanity, and/or nationalism are important too.
Wen Tianxiang(1236-1283), a prime minister during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), was truly loyal to his nation. He commanded the army to fight against the invading Mongols. He escaped from death at least 20 times but was finally captured by the Mongols. He, however, would not betray his nation and chose death.
Before he was executed, he fell down his knees and faced towards the south, where his nation was, and recited famous lines from his poem: “Who won’t die in the life from the ancient? / The red heart is to be left for shining the history!” All people salute and support his loyal behavior, and he is treated as a hero.
